History of the college

The Weeraketiya Central College founded in 1940 is one of the first few central colleges established under the concept of Mr. C.W.W.Kannangara, the minister of education in the first independent parliament and the father of the free education in Sri Lanka , as well.

This school situated in a very rural area at the foot of scenic Kondagala conical hill, was originally called Miriswatta School . At the outset, the classes were conducted in a few cadjan thatched huts, but now it has gone a long way to be the premier college in Hambantota, with many three storied buildings and all infrastructure facilities needed to be a fully fledged educational institute.
Presently with a strength of over 3,000 students, it can claim to have over 10,000 past pupils  in all walks of life spread not only throughout the island, but also in overseas.

Formation of Association of Past Pupils-Colombo Chapter

In 1990, six such past pupils employed in Colombo met at the Sambodi Viharaya in Colombo Fort and had the first discussion with the idea of organizing a past Pupils Association of Weeraketiya Central College Colombo Branch.  We can never forget the advices given by Rev. Vitharandeniya Chandrajothi Thero, on this matter, over a cup of tea at the first meeting.  An attack by a terrorist caused this reverend priest to leave us all untimely, and we wish him now the eternal bliss in Nibbana.  Encouraged by this Priest’s Anusasana, over a period of five years, all the meetings of our branch were held in the cadjan shed of this temple in Colombo Fort.

Our first annual general meeting had around 25 members and we remember with gratitude the attendance of two stalwart teachers of Weeraketiya Central College at this meeting, namely Prof. Mendis Rohanadeera and Kalasuri Mr. Bandula Fernando. We consider that it is but correct to treat Mr. Bandula Fernando as one of our Gurudevas, because he did not stop encouraging us by donating Rs. 15,000/= to start a fund, but later he established a scholarship fund by depositing Rs. 50,000/=.

Since then the pioneers had to trudge so many miles on foot or otherwise to increase our membership over 200 in Colombo .
